Although thankfully not as common as it is in adults, hair loss affects many thousands of children. And for those that are affected, hair loss can be a life-changing experience. Hurtful comments, prolonged stares, and bullying leads to feelings of isolation, loss of self-confidence and anxiety. The emotional strain of simply looking different from their peers is a constant battle for children across the UK. Fortunately, the charity Little Lady Locks is there to offer support to those affected with hair loss.
Little Lady Locks
Founded in 2018 by hair professional Ashley Higgins, the charity was created to help children through these difficult experiences. Little Lady Locks make and provide high quality wigs, hair replacement systems, accessories, hats, and headbands. All exist to help children suffering with hair loss due to medical conditions like alopecia, cancer treatments, or other health issues.
The Founder’s Story
The charity’s founder, Ashley, is a hair professional specialising in hair loss. While helping her adult hair loss clients, she heard heartbreaking stories from young girls who had been bullied and isolated because of their hair loss. She recognised that many families simply can’t afford to buy high-quality wigs or other hair replacement systems. There was clearly a major gap that needed to be filled, and Ashley was inspired to create Little Lady Locks. By providing services to anyone under the age of 18 free-of-charge, the charity is designed to ensure that no child has to go without help, regardless of their family’s finances.
A Unique Approach
What makes Little Lady Locks so special is the personalised approach they take. Each wig they make is painstakingly handmade to look realistic and natural. Every item is tailored to suit the individual needs of every child they help. They also provide a range of hair solutions involving customised headbands, hats, bandanas, and other accessories. All are designed to fit comfortably and again, look incredibly realistic. Their attention to detail is vital for these children. Many of them will feel highly self-conscious and fearful of being judged due to their hair loss.
A Charity Close To Our Heart
At Hair Gain, we understand just how deeply hair loss can affect a person’s wellbeing. While our focus is on helping adults fighting with thin hair and hair fall, we naturally feel a strong connection to charities like Little Lady Locks. They are giving children emotional and practical support they need through some of the most tough times of their lives. We believe that everyone deserves to feel happy and confident in their appearance. And especially those who are facing the additional challenge of illness. Our team have been deeply moved by Ashley’s mission and read the stories of the children she has helped. We’re proud to highlight their amazing work!
The Starlight Winter Gala: Supporting A Vital Cause
Little Lady Locks relies on the generosity of the public and corporate sponsors to offer their life-changing services. On November 15th, they’ll host the Starlight Winter Gala, a fantastic charity ball in The Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester. Attendees will enjoy a brilliant night of dining, live entertainment, and a charity auction, all while knowing they’re helping to make a real difference in the lives of children across the country. Tickets are on sale now, and if you can’t make the night, then you can make a donation to this important cause on the Little Lady Locks here.
How You Can Support Them
There are many ways you can get involved and support Little Lady Locks. Attending the Starlight Winter Gala, making a donation, sponsoring a little lady, or organising a fundraiser, every penny raised goes towards providing hair systems to help a child suffering with hair loss. Hair can also be donated and is always welcome. The charity helps transform the lives of around 12 young people a month, offering not just hair replacement systems, but emotional healing and confidence. By supporting their work, we can play a part in helping these young people find normalcy and joy in their lives.
